Goodbye Facebook
I managed to find the 'delete my account' option on Facebook. I finally realised that Facebook was really serving no purpose for me. If someone wants to find me, to get in touch, then it's pretty straightforward - you don't need Facebook for that. But then, if I've lost touch with someone and not really spoken to them since I was 11 years old, I'm kind of thinking, "Well, can we maintain some semblance of friendship or has that relationship run its course?" How about we let go a little bit and embrace face-to-face relationships with people in our immediate vicinity? I should add (but won't) that I got sick to the back teeth (is that the right expression?!) of the constant purile bragging that is endemic on Facebook. Is it some weird, basic human nature that we have to insist on telling people how many books we've read, how many films we've seen, how many countries we've visited, how many 'friends' we have, how fantastic we are, how many children we've reared . . . how many 'trophies' we've acquired?! What is all that about? I'm sure I learnt in my teens that people don't actually care about that stuff.

  • Comment: it's for that sort of reason that i won't join twitter - fb is good for me though - mainly for the photos and the ease of chatting to people i actually go and see anyway (phone substitute). every now and then i consider a major cull of people i don't "care" about...
    did A****** enjoy his birthday?

  • Comment: The only good thing I've heard about Twitter is that if some kind of 'event' happens (say, an earthquake, riot, etc.) then Twitter is typically the first place where this will be reported. But otherwise . . . why, oh why, oh why? Apart from the fact that most of the content on Twitter is just gibberish (as far as I can make out) why would anyone care about the minutia of someone else's life? Unless it was someone famous, perhaps . . . Yes, A****** had a fantastic birthday. It rained all day but we were inside anyway. I'll upload the pictures soon enough.

  • Comment: Hey, Rosie, don't be afraid to cull people from Facebook every so often. I did that every so often and my rationale was this, "Well, you wanted to 'be my friend' and you've 'been my friend' for about 6 months now and you've made no attempt to contact me so, erm . . . well, what's the point?" I guess I hated the idea that somebody somewhere is gloating over the fact that they've got another 'friend' to add to their sad little list. Blimey, does that sound a bit angry or bitter or something?
