Yo! Fire engines! What gives?!
I won't be the first to admit that over the last few years, I've contributed less and less written words to this blog thing that I have. Mainly I now use it as an image repository - somewhere to dump all my family photographs. And yet here we have some genuine 'things' happening today that were quite significant, which is surely where the blog comes in. Tonight, the plan was a meal at Bella Italia (I think booked for about 16:45), followed by a film at the cinema; in our case the new Peanuts / Snoopy film. At Bella Italia, we had a window seat, looking down North Road. And, yeah, I suppose in retrospect, when you're a few dozen metres (if that) from the edge of an area designated as at severe risk of flooding, you might well understand why a few fire engines turn up, probably pumping water or something. As it turned out (again, in retrospect), they were actually rescuing a car that had become stranded in the flood water, the occupants unable to get out. Serious stuff. After the meal, like I say, we went to see this new Snoopy film. I won't bother giving it its proper title; it barely deserves that. And you know what, I don't think I've ever fallen asleep in the cinema, but tonight I drifted off for a few minutes, maybe longer. It was that kind of film. Dull, dull, dull. Apart from me, M**** and the boys, there were just two girls in the entire auditorium, and they kept getting out and going back to the foyer, probably because it was more interesting there. We didn't even think it too odd that there were so few people there. So in a nutshell, here's all you need to know about this film: if you're suffering from insomnia, there are probably more expensive remedies available that will afford you one and half hours sleep. Not that I slept for that long, but I probably could have. Dull, dull, dull. A completely aimless, meandering, pointless film. Later on that night, with the news and various outlets giving increasingly dire warnings of floods, we had a bad feeling when the lights flickered at about 22:25. We quickly gathered torches, matches, candles and all the usual stuff. Sure enough, five minutes later, the power went off and stayed off. Street-lights, traffic lights, everything. Gone. Little did we know how long we would be without power . . .
