Partial solar eclipse 2015
| |
On our way to school this morning, at about 08:50, we had a little break in the clouds but I was like, "Boys, don't look at the sun. They'll give you your viewing glasses at school," but R****** was like, "I just glimpsed and I could see a chunk taken out of the sun," and then of course A****** had to do the same. And I had to concede that perhaps a little glimpe won't hurt. Sure enough, there was indeed a little chunk out of the sun. The eclipse had begun. My camera wasn't quite ready (schoolboy error) as auto mode was decidedly useless, the shutter speed being far too slow. Those first six pictures were taken at about 09:10 on the University of Cumbria football pitch, near the nursery. Shutter priority mode was the way forward, set to the highest possible (1 / 2000 or thereabouts). At about 09:25 at work, everyone (well, I think everyone) trooped out to look for the eclipse. Whilst the weather was pretty heavily cloudy, we just got this tiny break at about 09:33 (which was probably around the time of maximum eclipse-ness anyway) when the clouds partially cleared and we were able to check out the eclipse unharmed with naked eyes. A little cheer went up. I took a few photos and perhaps about 15 / 20 seconds later, the moment was gone. There were no more gaps in the cloud cover but at least we got that little break at the crucial moment.
