Lurkers Revealed!!! I'm thinking of having some kind of month dedicated to lurkers (i.e. those that read this but never (or rarely) leave comments) revealing themselves. I often check the IP addresses of visitors and can correlate these with most people I know (I recently had to bar a certain Chinese IP address, as they kept posting stupid adverts), but there are always a few unknowns. I don't know how this would work though. In my boredom I'm sure I could think of something.

- Comment: May I be the first to reveal myself as a lurker. Since my high profile work as UN Secretary General ended, I was just aimlessly surfing until I found your wonderful blog. Love to the family,

- Comment: Since I finished standing rigidly next to snooker tables, my life was empty until I found your blog. Errm, can I go now? See, I'm even talking like you.

- Comment: Yes, the same person, and I know full well who they are. But as this person wants to be anonymous, I ought to maintain their anonymity, though god knows why. I don't understand the question about IP address and security. You may need to re-phrase or elaborate.

- Comment: Well the thing is you see my full name is determinable from the web address and so is my IP address. Just wondering if there's a security risk there?

- Comment: I don't understand what Former Line Manager is on about with regard breaching human rights, but then I still haven't thought of any sensible means of collating data regarding lurkers. I'm certainly not about to publish information mapping IP addresses to (possible) people - that's not really what I'm on about. As far as I'm aware, an IP address only identifies a connection to a COMPUTER (or more precisely, a network interface card) at one moment in time, and therefore doesn't actually say a great deal. Information can be merely inferred from that IP address.
